Robert Dean Taylor had been staying with Whited in 1993, and invited Lowery over to the mobile home that the two men shared July 27, 1993. He tracked Whited down seven years later in Virginia.Īfter interviewing Whited several times, he admitted to being involved in the cover-up of Lowery's murder, and knowing the killer. When a detective with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office came across Whited's name, he started looking for him, according to the facts of the case. He was discovered at the bottom of a 10-foot shaft in a ruby mine in Rutherford County. Pittman was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter after killing his son, Jeremiah Pittman, who was 18 in September 1992. Wise, 76, was found stabbed to death in an upstairs room of his home. At the time they honed in on Garland Edward Pittman, who was later convicted of murdering Asheville real estate agent Wally Wise in 1991. Whited was considered a possible suspect when the investigation first began, but detectives paid little attention to him. In 1998 two names, Robbin Whited and Robert, written on a small piece of paper, jumped out at the detective. One detective assigned to the case would periodically review it "looking for anything that might jump out," the case summary states. Investigators continued exhausting lead after lead for five years until one detective stumbled upon a tip that they had since the early days of the investigation, according to a case summary from the 2008 trial. After months of searching, the State Bureau of Investigation discovered Lowery's remains in a wooded area near Lake James on Feb. 6, 1994.Ī medical examiner determined she died from a skull fracture after sustaining blunt-force injuries to the back of her head and probably the right side of her head, according to an autopsy report.

On Thursday, about nine years since Lowery's murderer was found guilty, the McDowell County case will be in the spotlight on A&E’s hit show “Cold Case Files."
